What Makes a Great Pit Bull?

Great pit bulls come from one thing: responsible ownership.  When they are loved and well-cared for they make wonderful pets and companions.  Pit Bulls continually out-rank other popular breeds in temperament studies by the American Temperament Test Society.  Pit Bulls ranked much higher for family pet ownership over breeds like the Collie, Dachshund, Beagle, Chihuahua, Airedale Terrier, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle and more.  It was a great moment in pit bull history when Sport Illustrated published this article.

The number of celebrity pit bull owners may surprise you.  Responsible owners include actors (Jessica Biel, Michael J Fox, Alicia Silverstone), comedians (John Daily), artists (Madonna, Pink) and even former presidents (Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson).  Famous pit bulls are everywhere!  You can’t forget Petey in The Little Rascals and Chance, voice of Michael J Fox, in Homeward Bound (pit bull watching pit bulls!).  Other Fun Facts about Famous Pit Bulls by Cesar Milan.   So Nat Geo did it… Animal Planet did it too:  see Famous Pit Bull lovers including modern stars and historic figures like Helen Keller.

Pit Bull Shows

DogTown is a sanctuary for up to 1,700 dogs and rescue animals in southern Utah.  The sanctuary has help rehabilitate several of the Michael Vick Dogs. Check out photos of Georgia, Meryl, Denzel on the Saving the Michael Vick Dogs episode series. You can catch new episodes of DogTown on Fridays at 8 PM on National Geographic.

The Pit Boss comes on Saturdays at 10 PM on Animal Planet.  It’s a pretty entertaining reality show about overcoming stereotypes.  A team of little people led by The Pit Boss, Shorty Rossi, raise money for Shorty’s Rescue.  Shorty’s Rescue cares for pit bulls larger than they!  The team goes to great lengths to rescue the dogs and even subject themselves to ‘little people wrestling’ to the sake of fundraising.

Pit Bull Blogs from my BlogRoll:  The Bad Rap Blog and the Vick Dog Blog and more to come.  These blogs are packed with information, photos, and video a pit bull lover needs to see!  They also include the latest news on Mike Vick Rescues and info on how you can help to “Secure the Future of the American Pit Bull Terrier as a cherished family companion”.  I found the cutest “Letter to Michael Vick” written by CityPits.com starring pit bull, Daisy.  The letter is written from Daisy’s point of view; it is a must read! Don’t forget to check out my own pup’s rescue story on the About Lady page on Love in Blue.    All of these pages focus on the positive; and that’s what I intend to do.

I love watching the Pit Boss. It’s about the Image of Pitbulls, but I think it also shows people how Little People are too. Great show.
Another good one is Pitbulls and Parolees on APL, but I think it’s not on right now, probably in between seasons.
    Good post. 🙂
